Pronominal Adverb

Pronominal is adjective form of word pronoun, meaning relating to pronoun. Most things containing pronoun can be described by adjective pronominal.

What is pronominal adverb?

We know that a preposition is followed by a noun phrase to form a prepositional phrase. Certain prepositions (in) followed by certain pronouns (that) form a prepositional phrase (in that), which can be converted into a single word (in that = therein) that functions adverbially. (After combining, preposition and pronoun swap their places.) The combined word so formed is called pronominal adverb.

Why is it called pronominal adverb? As mentioned in the opening paragraph, we can use the term pronominal with most things containing pronoun, and here the adverb has been built on a pronoun (that).

Pronominal adverbs are mostly found in legal documents as a way of referencing words earlier in the text.
